Yes daffodils prefer some sun - they should bloom reliably next spring without sun, but in order for them to return year after year, at least some sun would help. The nice thing about daffodils - beyond their most cheering arrival - is that they are unbothered by squirrels and chipmunks. I planted most of my SSEF bulbs in weatherproof pots on the porch, and will plant them out next summer after they finish blooming.
Good luck!
