If you can believe it, February 1st is the day you can first bring in forsythia 
branches to force. If you can make your way through the snow to a bush, cut the 
long branches that stick out beyond the main body of the plant. Cut just above 
a nodule so that you leave some stem before the next nodule to put in water. 
Stick a bunch of branches in a vase and change the water every couple of days. 
They will bloom for you within a week or two. The first harbinger of Spring!
