The irony that the same people who invited and embraced 'Big Lie' conspiracy speakers like Seth Kessel are involved with Monday’s solemn ceremony, is not lost on most people. Especially veterans. That Bemis meeting was well organized, was intended to stay under the radar, and had echoes of Father Coughlin's meetings of the '30s. I know because I was there and had cameras pointed at me because I looked different. Maybe it was because I was wearing a mask to guard against Covid. Volunteers at the event had no problem with attendees sporting lewd, passive-aggressive ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ t-shirts, needed a motorcycle gang outside to ‘keep the peace’, and bused in at least one out-of-state shipwreck that idolizes Nazi-goon Julius Streicher, and forgot or doesn't care that the internet is forever. The fact that the current crop of Movement Conservatives, whose legacy includes starting the Civil War, opposed Equal Rights, and took the NRA from its original purpose, to what it is now back in 1975, held a CPAC meeting in Budapest last week which had an authoritarian prime minister and an anti-Semite as its keynote speakers, while video-conferencing in Tucker Carlson, and a former one-term president, tells us exactly which direction the wind blows within the GOP's ivory tower. We already knew that. What I don't know is why so many people today, especially veterans, many of which had distinguished careers in the military and are model citizens at home, want to reinstate a man with nefarious proclivities, was twice impeached, who was a friend of Jeffrey Epstein, instigated a coup, and called American WW1 war dead 'losers and suckers'. But they knew what they were signing up for, right? As for my Memorial Day, I'll be buffing my boss' collector WW2 Avenger torpedo-bomber. The same type of plane that George H. Bush flew in combat. And speaking of Bush, somehow, I get the feeling that when he was president, never asked 'what is this place?' when visiting the USS Arizona Memorial.
