If you do decide on solar, I recommend not going with the presenter
Great Sky Solar. We chose them in 2019 and they still haven't
resolved all our problems. They are not scammers but I think they are
in over their heads.

They told us installation involved about a seven week process of
planning and ordering before the installation. Shortly before the
scheduled installation date their electrician showed up, looked at our
breaker panels, and said they needed to be replaced. This should not
have been a surprise. It might be typical. Replacing breaker panels
requires coordination with Eversource to shut off power and that has
some lead time. There was more. The seven weeks turned out to be a
lot longer. I told our story to a builder who replied "Welcome to the
past 35 years of my life." Chasing after subcontractors is his job.
It isn't my job. See
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/03/31/business/they-spent-24000-solar-panels-then-eversource-took-four-months-turn-them/
for another family's story.

Our solar generation was not as high as promised. In hindsight, they
had the most optimistic generation prediction of the three bidders.
They gave us a warranty so for 10 years we can chase after them every
winter to write us a check for the past year's shortage. I suspect
their tree shade model is not accurate for our location, but that is
only a guess. Another bidder wanted to fly a drone to measure tree
height. It refused to take off so close to Hanscom.

And then there is the credit. You might think you would be billed for
net use, consumption minus generation, but it is not that simple. The
powers that be wanted voters to experience the thrill of getting a
check in the mail. For that we have a second meter to measure
production and determine the size of the check. That one doesn't work
right. We are getting about 2/3 the credit we should be getting. I
think the problem is our battery backup. The "critical load" panel
attached to our battery diverts solar power before it gets to the
meter to be measured. If I am right you won't have this problem if
you don't have a battery. Eversource thinks it's Great Sky's problem
and Great Sky evidently doesn't understand how to fix it. After about
a year they learned there was a box they needed to install to talk to
the meter. They installed it. No change. Eversource said the box
didn't have enough memory. Memory?

Recently our battery stopped working. Their advice is to turn it off
and turn it on again.
