Dear LincolnTalk, Greetings from one of your three elected water commissioners! I’m writing to let you all know that I do not plan to run for a second term, and to encourage you to consider running for the position in time for the 2023 spring elections.
There is a lot to commend the position. It is a great public service to the community to contribute as a water commissioner. It is relatively easy to contribute in ways that sing to you as there is a wide variety of work to go around! The problems of supplying clean and safe water on demand in an economical manner are challenging but not intractable, and include both very long-term as well as more immediate considerations ranging from the financial, to the engineering, to outreach and education, and to conservation, among other important town values. It is a great way to learn about town government, the town’s capital and operating budget planning process (which we go through as a check and balance even though as an enterprise fund we are under no obligation to do so), and to spend time with fellow volunteer citizens and professionals who are extraordinarily competent, engaged and passionate about what they do. Our Lincoln Water Department staff is literally award winning! If you’d like to discuss the position with me, I’d be happy to do so. Please just shoot me an email or call me. It seems my cell number is wrong in our phone book, but the home number is good, as is, of course, this email address! It has been a real privilege to serve as one of your elected water commissioners. Thank you for the opportunity and experience. Thank you also for considering this particular way of serving our community. Best regards, Michelle Barnes Water Commissioner South Great Road -- The LincolnTalk mailing list.
