As part of our communications around the next contract of the Green Energy
Choice program, participants will receive a mailer on or around 12/2 with
details regarding the specific level to which the recipient is enrolled, costs,
and the other levels Lincoln's program offers. As Paul noted, program
participants will continue to save money against Eversource's rates for another
6 months, at which point Eversource will solicit bids for a new supply
contract. Consumer cost is one of the factors we take into account when
managing Lincoln's Green Energy Choice program. The program is on track to have
collectively saved participants ~1.1 million dollars by year's end when
compared to Eversource's rates. While it's important to note that we can not
guarantee future savings against Eversource's rates, by keeping cost in mind
along with our goals to support renewably generated power on our local grid,
we've managed to significantly reduce Lincoln's contribution to carbon
emissions while saving participant's money.
For the next 6 months at least, the Green Energy Choice program will continue
to save participants money against Eversource's rates, regardless of the
program level in which you enroll. Unfortunately, due to market conditions
effecting all energy suppliers, these rates are significantly higher than when
we signed our previous contract. Current rate increases have been caused by a
variety of inflationary pressures effecting the price of goods across the
global economy, including the war in Ukraine which is particularly impacting
energy prices. By participating in the program, you can help ensure a future
where energy production is local, renewable, and do so for at least the next 6
months saving money when compared to Eversource's rates.
If you are already signed up for the program, look for the mailer next week for
more details. If you've not yet signed up, now is a great time to join the
program - check out the Lincoln Green Energy Choice website or call
1-844-651-8919 for details on enrolling.
Cheers!

For anyone wondering whether they will be kept in the dark, this may provide
some reassurance: there are state requirements to keep people informed when
prices change for our "community choice aggregation" electricity supply, and we
will comply with them.  It also may be comforting to know that anyone can join
or leave the Town's program at any time. So while there will be more publicity
to come, as the state requires, I can provide some information here.
A few weeks ago, the Town renewed its supply contract for the Lincoln Green
Energy Choice program, setting prices for a year starting January 1. On or
about Nov. 17, Eversource proposed to the state Dept. of Public Utilities its
rates for the six month period starting January 1. I understand the DPU
typically approves such proposals, so the following cost comparison may be of
interest.
Eversource has proposed a big rate hike, to 25.649 cents per kilowatt hour for
its standard rate for residential customers. The Lincoln Green Energy Choice
prices will also go up, but each of the three tiers in our program will be less
expensive than the new Eversource rate: Basic at 21.206 cents, Standard Green
at 22.316 cents, and 100% Green at 24.018 cents. So you will save money staying
in (or joining, if you're not already in) the Lincoln Green Energy Choice
program, versus the Eversource residential rate applicable for the next six
months. (Beyond that time, we can’t predict what the Eversource rate will be
and therefore what the cost differential will be.)
Some have asked why a spike in fossil fuel prices would affect even the “100%
Green” option in our Lincoln Green Energy Choice program, which is based
entirely on wind power. That’s a great question with an interesting answer that
I will unpack in a separate post.

Someone posed a question about the GEC contract for rates which is up in
January. Was that ever answered at all?
The GEC sent out multiple emails telling us how great this new service would
be. Now the contract is up and rates will be changing it would be nice to know
what the new rates might be and how the negotiations are going. If the rates
change it would be nice to have time to look it over and make a decision. As is
I would not have known the contract was up had that poster not mentioned it. As
I had said we are getting. Crickets from the GEC on this as of yet --
