Hello Mary et al,
So, I'm going to answer Mary's questions first and then I'm going to list a few
tips I've learned over the past 10 years with TVs, internet, and streaming.
So, Pluto TV is a free app that works on any smart tv. It is not exactly the
same as cable. If this is going to be your main source of TV, it may take some
adjusting. For example, I am in in Pluto TV and I scrolled down to Local News
and it is listing CBS News Los Angeles, CBS News Miami, and so on and so on but
yes, CBS Boston is there. The channel numbers are not going to match what you
are used to. They also have some good on- demand stuff for free.
I would recommend if you are ditching cable, do the following:
1. Make sure you have a Smart TV that is RECENT. Mine is 2017 and is
considered ancient these days. If you have to shop for a new one, ask WHEN IT
WAS MANUFACTURED. I made this mistake once and my TV did not stream. If it
costs you a few extra dollars, I would consider it a good investment because if
you get an old one, it may not work or may not work well. Technology changes
fast.
1. Get a recent firestick. The newer the better. I have Apple TV but there
are many out there. Don't buy an old one and don't buy a jail-broken one.
Someone here can correct me if i'm wrong, but if there are still jail-broken
firesticks out there (in lamens terms, you get free access to more TV and
movies), don't get one. I'm not sure they are legal. For a few extra movies,
don't risk it. To me it sounds sketchy. If anyone wants to chime in with their
expertise, feel free.
3. Try the free stuff first before paying. For instance, Pluto TV is
free. It is not a carbon copy of traditional cable but you get what you need.
If you don't like it, you can try paying options like YouTube TV,
like a previous poster said. That runs about $65/month. But if you drop the
$250 a month Triple Play/ bundle plan, you are still ahead. If you
are paying $60 for internet and $65 for Youube TV you are only at $125 total
per month . When your TV is set up with your firestick, go to the
app store and download Pluto TV and whatever you want (Netflix, Amazon
Prime, etc.)
4. If you have an Amazon prime account you can watch their Prime
movies for free. You can also upgrade on Amazon for things like HBO,
Starz, etc. Many of these are month to month subscriptions. If you
watch everything you want on HBO for one month, just cancel it and you
won't be charged anymore for it, unless you sign up again. You can also get
HBO and movie channels on the app store and pay month to month if
you want. There are a couple of ways to sign up for channels. I sometimes find
it easier to have it all on my Amazon account, but play around
with it to find your personal preference.
The only other suggestion I can think of is if you do have Verizon Cell and
Verizon Internet, they sometimes have a "bundle" discount for this. But you can
absolutely have Verizon cell and not Verizon internet and vice versa. Their
rewards program is decent as well.
Hope that helps. My electricity bill also decreased when I got rid of my cable
box.
-Ellen

Thanks, Ellen. This is very helpful. Are you able to get PBS, Channel 2 or
11 or 16 or 44?

Just food for thought as I know you said no Verizon. But, I previously had
Sprint (I guess it's now T Mobile?) And my cell service in Lincoln was awful.
Dropped calls all the time. I switched to Verizon cell service and no issue
with dropped calls. I do have Verizon internet for about 50 or 60 a month (no
cable, just internet) and everything has been going smoothly with streaming TV
by way of purchasing subscriptions of my choice. Pluto TV is free and there are
others as well. I would say that bundling isn't a great option if you are
trying to minimize cost. Just my 2 cents.

I ditched cable and the landline, got YouTube TV ($65/month) and switched to
T-Mobile for internet ($50/month) and it’s the smartest decision ever. I was
paying FiOS close to $250/month for the bundle. I live in S. Lincoln and it all
works perfectly. Good luck!

Does anyone have an alternative to Comcast other than Verizon that is cheaper
than $250 a month. I have cable, land phone and internet through them and feel
like a they are taking advantage of me.
I'm hoping to get another cell phone soon. I hate this bureaucracy. I think not
"bundling" is the way to go. Not sure.
Any thoughts?
