She went out on the ice to try and save her dog who had fallen through. If you google Aureet Bar Yam Tragedy, there are several articles about it.

Not to bring sadness in a joyful season and in the midst of wonderful memories, but alongside some body of water in Lincoln, surrounded by woods, there is a plaque affixed to a large rock that speaks of a young woman who drowned in the cold waters there -- I have always assumed by going through the ice. Does anyone know it and know the history? Anne Warner We used to skate on Valley Pond from time to time, but
mostly on our own pond my father had dug behind our house on Conant Road in the mid-1960s.
Sometimes it would snow and leave a dry inch or two on top of the ice, and that
was the best, because we could skate behind snow shovels and clear paths to
make a town. My younger brother and I also played a game where we would skate
toward each other, arms crossed in front, and whoever fell down from the
collision lost. (It was usually him.) Bruno, our yellow Lab, would run after us
as we quickly skated away. Then when we stopped suddenly, he would go flying
by, claws scrabbling at the ice while looking behind him at us laughing.

We have many decades of skating memories on Farrar Pond and the Sudbury river. Taught our kids to skate there holding on to chairs and hockey sticks. And while it is not for the
inexperienced, a long river skate with a packed lunch is a delightful way to spend a winter morning or afternoon. I have two particularly special memories on ice. One was the year in the late 70’s that the river flooded so high we went skating amongst the
golfing greens on Nashawtuc Country Club. And most memorable of all was skating the river on (thick) black ice by moonlight. Totally exhilarating. Caveat/safety notice: pond and especially river skating should only be done by those with experience due to the variable nature of the surfaces. Always pack a rope and/or other means
of getting yourself and others out of trouble. <image001.png>

I remember thick black ice on Beaver Pond in the 1990s when we could see fish swimming under our skates! (We always brought a thick rope just in case.)
