If you can believe it, February 1st is the day on which you can first bring in 
forsythia branches to force.  Most forsythia - unless someone has pruned them 
(hope not!) will have shoots that grew longer than the rest of the bush during 
the summer. Just cut these right above a bud and put a bunch of them into a 
tall vase with warm water. Within a week they will be in full bloom. A 
harbinger of Spring (which I was taught to capitalize but no one does 
anymore….) Anne Warner
