Dear Lincoln Talk readers, I am writing to you one last time as a Candidate for Lincoln School Committee (K-8). Over these last few weeks, it has been a great pleasure to meet so many Lincoln residents at various events- in people’s homes, at the dump, running errands, and at the PTO Candidate Forum.
I am running for Lincoln School Committee because I love education policy and the work that the School Committee does. I have a longstanding interest in education policy and I have work experience in education budget policy. But most of all, I am excited to serve the community as a member of the School Committee. I am dedicated to our schools and I want the best possible outcomes for all of our students. As a member of the School Committee I would like to work on some of the following priorities: Establishing a budget subcommittee of the SC, similar to the Lincoln-Sudbury School budget subcommittee. A subcommittee, made up of members of the School Committee, school administrators, and potentially town residents could spend more time looking at the details of the school budget and provide more transparency for Lincoln residents. Supporting our educators through competitive compensation, increased PD opportunities, and access to mental health services as we emerge from the pandemic. When my family and I moved to Lincoln during COVID we felt so lucky that our elementary and middle school children could attend school every day. We also realized that without the teachers’ willingness, LPS could not have opened. In preparation for the recent LEA contract negotiations, the SC analyzed surrounding communities’ teacher compensation to ensure that Lincoln is competitive. I would propose the SC continue to update this analysis every year, and look to other ways to attract and retain a diverse and talented workforce. Supporting the district’s important AIDE work. In the survey designed to assess the community’s priorities for the selection of the new Superintendent, the number one priority for residents and educators was that the new superintendent continue the district’s AIDE work. The SC must continue to support the schools as they work to address inequities and foster inclusion in our education system. Emphasizing the importance of high expectations for student achievement - especially in middle school. Over the past several weeks I have heard a lot of discussion about whether or not our middle schoolers are prepared for high school. There are many different opinions on this topic and more information is needed. The SC needs to work with Lincoln-Sudbury to collect information so that our schools know how to best prepare 8th graders for their next educational step. Thank you for the opportunity to run for School Committee and to share my thoughts with you. I hope you will consider voting for me on Monday. Matina Madrick 67 Conant Road
