The March 22 evening meeting of the CCBC was disappointing for many public attendees who had hoped to hear detail on programming needs, alternate spaces, and a process for soliciting community opinion. Instead, the Committee ruminated for over an hour on the need for a Community Survey and a Forum. A Community Survey will be offered in time for results to be presented at a Forum planned for April 25th. However, the survey has not yet been developed or conducted and the Forum has not yet shown up on the CCBC website. At 8 pm, public discussion surfaced many topics as residents attending in person and via Zoom were allowed to comment. These comments prompted the Committee to offer an “Open Mic Night” which has now been scheduled for 7 pm, April 4th, in person at the Hartwell Multipurpose Room and via zoom (see: Lincolncommunitycenter.com <x-msg://138/Lincolncommuniycenter.com>). Apparently, residents will be invited to share their views. Sounds like fun! The CCBC and Town staff may be hard at work on the Community Center but this work needs to be more transparent to the Town. Public meeting dates need to be announced broadly, the website needs frequent updates, and email announcements should be sent to those who have signed up on the site. (The various cost points for the Community Center are being debated elsewhere on LincolnTalk and should also be addressed sooner rather than later.) I urge all residents to visit the CCBC website, sign up for email updates, and begin paying attention to the weekly meetings. We must see an analysis of programming needs and an inventory of available spaces that might serve those needs prior to work by the architects--and before we are asked to vote on this important issue next fall. Personally, I would vote for investment in a modest new building on the Hartwell site and an additional sum allocated to make existing spaces in Bemis Hall, Pierce House, and the Hartwell Pods more suitable for programs. I urge the Committee to seek input from the Town immediately. Lynne Smith 5 Tabor Hill Road Lincoln, MA 01773 cell: 781-258-1175 [email protected]
