We are at this moment rehearsing with the orchestra and soloists (we’re in an aria now so I’m not multitasking) and it sounds amazing!

Rave reviews for the latest music video from Imagine Dragons? No, it's the critics' praise for Dixit Dominus, which had its debut in Rome — in the year 1707. And the composer? George Frideric Handel, whose Messiah remains one of the most-performed choral works of all time.

Handel was a mature 56 when Messiah was written. But in 1707, he was only 22 years old and on his first visit to Italy, fresh from the German provinces. Already a master of the art of counterpoint and opera, the young musician quickly secured patronage from three powerful cardinals and was commissioned to compose Dixit Dominus. Exuberant, dramatic, brimming with non-stop virtuosity, the work was an immediate success. As Mozart is said to have remarked, “Handel understands effect better than any of us — when he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt.”

Back in Germany, another 22-year-old was also making musical history that year. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christ lag in Todes Banden, first performed in 1707, is his earliest surviving chorale cantata. Conductor John Eliot Gardiner describes the cantata as Bach’s “first-known attempt at painting narrative in music…a bold, innovative piece of musical drama.”

Join the Jameson Singers on May 6 for a golden opportunity to hear the works of two master musicians at the height of their youthful powers! Also on the program are Antonio Lotti’s 8-part Crucifixus and Heinrich Schütz’s splendid motet, Unser Wandel ist im Himmel.
