You can take action today against the climate crisis by writing to Representative Katherine Clark about the proposed expansion of Hanscom Field. I have a meeting with Katherine Clarkâs office next Wednesday so a large number of messages sent before then will have an amplified impact.
Efforts to build the 27 new hangars at Hanscom continue, along with efforts to stop the project. There are many legitimate concerns about this project, but the important decisions will be made in Boston and Washington, so we need to focus on arguments that will resonate with state and federal legislators. The impact on the climate crisis from expanding private jet infrastructure is the single issue most likely to be seen as having national importance. The only way to limit private jet operations is to limit construction of private jet infrastructure. Advocates of the proposed expansion argue that the project will be good for business and encourage companies to move to Massachusetts. I believe companies locate in Massachusetts because we have many scientists, engineers and world class universities, not because that the CEO can use a private jet to take a vacation in Bermuda. Advocates may also claim that this infrastructure is needed to prevent disruptions in the aviation system. I think it is much more important to worry about disruptions to the global climate. Federal law makes it difficult to impose limits on private jet use. If the expansion is built, Hanscom Field will not be allowed to create rules that interfere with the rights of private jet operators. We need to turn this around and have rules that prevent private jet operators from interfering with the rights of everyone to have a livable climate. Please support my effort to address the proposed expansion of Hanscom Field by writing to her by Tuesday. My position is that this expansion will have a large negative effect on the climate crisis and we must mitigate the impact of aviation on the environment instead of creating expanded infrastructure for private jet travel, the most wasteful form of aviation. Sending lots of polite and thoughtful messages right now will have an impact. https://katherineclark.house.gov/email-me <https://katherineclark.house.gov/email-me> Thanks, -Christopher Eliot, Ph.D. Hanscom Field Advisory Commission, Chair Lincoln
