A warning about woodchuck interactions: I witnessed my 25 lb basenji (breed with strong prey drive) attack a WC in my yard last year. My dog had no wounds, but got blood on his head/neck fur during the tussle. The wounded critter got away (for good).

The vet imposed a 45 day home quarantine and administered an early rabies booster to my dog, as WC can carry rabies. Everyone is fine (?except the WC), but the quarantine was inconvenient and worrisome. So keep pets and people away from these critters!

 Michelle,

I can’t imagine you will have your whistlepigs much longer with those big gorgeous pups you have!

My favorite is whistlepig too, though I’ve yet to hear them whistle. I swear we have multiple families of them. When I get grumpy about them eating my milkweed (thought they were poisonous to most!) or my garden vegetables, I start calling them groundchuck. Don’t worry, though, I do them no harm. I then remind myself I’m gardening for wildlife, lol.

Right, all of the above!

Fun etymology from Wikipedia:
Mormato monax is known as groundhog, woodchuck, groundpig, whistlepig (my favorite), whistler, and many other names.
"Woodchuck" is from the Algonquin/Narragansett name for it, "wuchak".
The official species name "monax" is from (another?) Algonquin name for it, moonack, meaning "digger".
They don't actually chuck any wood, but they do dig and also reportedly whistle to communicate threats.

They are related to guinea pigs in that they are all rodents (along with squirrels, marmots, beavers, porcupines, hamsters, mice, etc.)

That is a groundhog!

Our yard was fully infested with them when we moved into our home in 2013.

Our large dog eradicated them with her barking in a year or so.

We had so many groundhogs that my daughter’s first birthday had a “Groundhogs & Daisies” theme:

Looking for some help identifying this critter who has been living in our yard for quite a while now.  Our son, 8, loves to watch it and wants to believe it’s a relative of his guinea pigs.  Thanks.
