Torrance Lewis, currently principal of the Baker (K-8) School in Brookline, will become Assistant Superintendent of the Lincoln Public School District beginning July 15. The School Committee last night approved the appointment recommended by in-coming Superintendent Parry Graham.
Mr. Lewis has more than 23 years of experience in middle-level learning, elementary education, K-8 schools, and educational leadership, including as assistant principal in both Belmont and Nantucket public schools. Dr. Graham announced the appointment to the school community in a letter this morning: I am very happy to announce the appointment of Torrance Lewis as Lincoln’s next assistant superintendent. I want to briefly share with you information about the process that led to Torrance’s selection, and why he will be a great addition to the Lincoln leadership team. After posting the assistant superintendent position, we put together a large and diverse group of teachers, administrators, and parents to serve as the first-round search committee. We used staff and family feedback to identify the qualities we were looking for in the next assistant superintendent, and to select initial candidates to interview. We were fortunate to have a broad and deep pool of qualified candidates, and the committee identified three finalists to move forward. Each finalist spent a day in the district, touring schools, meeting with staff and administrators, and participating in a forum with caregivers. I then reviewed staff and family feedback and conducted reference checks, and it was clear that Torrance would be a great fit to help Lincoln continue to grow and improve as a high-quality district. This evening, the School Committee approved his appointment as assistant superintendent. Torrance has an extensive and diverse background in education. He is currently the principal of the Baker School in Brookline, serving students in grades K-8. He was an assistant principal in both Belmont and Nantucket public schools, and he has been a teacher and program coordinator in multiple schools in Massachusetts, Georgia, and Brazil (where he had the opportunity to work directly with military families). Torrance’s references described him over and over as a strategic and creative thinker; as someone who builds relationships with students, staff, and families; as someone who is visible both in schools and in the community; and as someone who is committed to AIDE work. As one staff member said, “he is a visionary who can really see the big picture of what something can be, and figure out how to get to that vision.” I am so excited to welcome Torrance to Lincoln, and am looking forward to opportunities for him to begin meeting staff and families over the summer, and to begin preparing an entry plan for his work next year.
