Abraham Lincoln had this to say about the Declaration:
Wise statesmen as they were, they knew the tendency of prosperity to breed tyrants, and so they established these great self-evident truths, that when in the distant future some man, some faction, some interest, should set up the doctrine that none but rich men, or none but white men, were entitled to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, their posterity might look up again to the Declaration of Independence and take courage to renew the battle which their fathers began …”
(Quoted in The Atlantic magazine, 2018.)

I love our Townie event: foot race, kids bike ride, the fabulous parade with our passionate, creative residents: kudos to Codman Farm for the most amusing signage and to the record number of Hanscom-expansion protesters and sign-carrying climate activists on foot.

But every year I’m in town, I go to hear our very own author, Rick Wiggin in full Colonial garb, read the Declaration of Independence. I especially like his enumeration of King George's injustices and the reasons we had to sever our connection with England but remain ‘in peace, friends’.  What great language those 18th century Americans used: consanguinity, acquiescence.  They were not yet fully inclusive but they were radical in their day.

I was sorry the audio was not better for Rick’s reading as his voice has wonderful gravitas.  The musket firing is always a jolt of recognition of the armed struggle that was sadly required. Thank you, Rick, and all the Lincoln Minutemen.
