Good question Sara. I don’t know the answer. I’m opting for the replenishing the soil regularly with homemade compost. I do a rough clearing out of the worms but know I’m still introducing more. Waiting patiently for more information from authorities.  The Facebook page is Invasive Jumping Worms.

How do I know if I've got jumping worms or  regular worm worms?

So, does reapplying compost/top dressing every year address the soil compromise?
Or does sterile soil deprive the worms of food?

Yes. They are bad. They don’t eat the plants, they eat all the organic parts of the soil leaving behind something that looks like coffee grounds and is essentially sterile. A problem indeed. UMass Agricultural Extension has a link to more information. There is also a Facebook page devoted to them.

Courage! Robin

Are they bad for the garden vs. normal worms?

Join the party Susan! The only strategy at the moment is to have a bucket of water and vinegar - half and half - at the ready, and just toss them in as you see them.. or you can just tiptoe away.. they are everywhere including the woods and fields.. one is hopeful that a solution will be found,  people are working around the clock..but not yet….  Chickens won’t go near them and haven’t seen birds go after them as well.. moles  will eat them I’m told.
There’s always something…. Good luck! Robin

I
Admit I should be punished for not tending to my garden for months - until this morning.
There were lots lots and lots of very large worms….
I am clear how to kill them but not how to catch them… is it easier to pot the plants and give the worms the garden??!!
Very disgusting….
Thoughts are welcome.
