Early Access to “Fashioned by Sargent”
John Singer Sargent’s Madame X stirred up a scandal when the portrait of the American socialite first debuted at the Paris Salon in 1884. The cause of the controversy was the dress, with its plunging neckline and a jeweled strap sliding off the right shoulder—a detail that Sargent later repainted in an upright position.
More fascinating stories about the famous painter and his manipulation of dress await in “Fashioned by Sargent,” opening this October. Co-organized with Tate Britain, this one-of-a-kind exhibition presents a new perspective on one of the world’s most beloved artists and brings together over 50 of Sargent’s portraits—including many rarely seen in Boston—along with more than a dozen period gowns and accessories.
As an MFA member, you can reserve your timed-entry tickets today—at no additional cost and before they go on sale to the public next week.
