Seal-coating is highly toxic to the environment and to humans. The off gassing lasts for years and the longevity of the desired result is short-lived. Worth considering. Please see below from a statement made by a local epidemiologist that I know:
“My healthy living tip for today is to refuse any seal-coating offers - do not coat your driveway!! Seal-coating does not protect your driveway from wear during the winter, the coating wears off quickly making your driveway look even worse, and most importantly, it is very toxic. It is usually made of coal tar, unless you happen to live in 1 of the few states that has outlawed coal-tar-based seal coatings.. I don't! Coal tar is highly toxic (pretty obvious when you breathe it in) and emits polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Toxins are released from seal-coated driveways for YEARS, and the unhealthy coal-tar particles are tracked into your home on shoes (another reason to leave your shoes at the door!).
