Lincoln as a town should not have a foreign policy, not even a morally
sound one that no person could possibly disagree with. Not even one
that I would approve of if it came out of the State Department. Our
local government's job is to manage the town, not to proclaim right
and wrong or designate villains and victims in a conflict 5,000 miles
away.

Our apparently silent town officials may have learned a lesson from
the Lincoln-Sudbury principal, who sent out a bland, inclusive message
expressing sorrow and offering support for "members of the LS Jewish
and Muslim communities." He got such an outpouring of hate, including
a mention in the Boston Globe, that he had to apologize and explain
that he, too, had hate in his heart. So now our high school has a
foreign policy. It shouldn't.
