Hello, My name is Colin Soukup, and I'm the Troop Leader for Lincoln Boy Scouts Troop 127. For my Eagle Scout project, I'll be building five Mason bee houses, replica models of ones sold at Mass Audubon, to be placed in key locations throughout the town. I'll also be creating three trail signs to educate hikers on Mason Bees and their importance as pollinators. An important component of an Eagle Scout project is to demonstrate the relevance of the project to the Scout's local town. This is done through donations, which illustrates the community's support of the project. I'm posting this message to ask for donations from the Lincoln community. I'm also looking for suggestions on where to install the houses when they're complete - preferably in large meadows and orchards, mounted to a fence or tree. If you or a neighbor would like a Mason Bee house on your property, please let me know. Please consider a contribution. Donations can be sent to the troop's treasurer, Marcie Karty, at 173 Bedford Rd., Lincoln, MA 01773. Checks should be made out to Troop 127 Lincoln. Questions can be emailed to [email protected]. mailto:[email protected] For more details on my project, see below! Why this project is important: My project is beneficial in two main ways: it increases pollination in the town's meadows and orchards, and spreads awareness of the benefits of Mason Bees, and what we all can do to help the cause. By placing these signs in front of popular trailheads, I hope more of the town will be inspired to take action. Mason bees are incredible pollinators for many reasons. They're up to 120 times more effective at pollinating than Honey or Bumble Bees, and aren't aggressive, making them safer to host. Mason bees will also pollinate in colder weather, so if we have a cold spring and the Honey Bees decide to not leave their hive, Mason Bees can be counted on to pollinate an orchard or crop. What I need: The project costs are specified below: * Wood and materials to build houses * Bee house tubes * Materials and tubes for future maintenance * Trail sign materials and installation * Bees The total comes out to around $450. Thank you so much for reading this and for helping my project. Yours in Scouting, Colin Soukup
