Such a fun article!  Slang can be an awesome tool to connect with youth and
breakdown barriers.  This spring I incorporated slang into middle school
history lessons and projects.  I observed reluctant learners engaged in
discussion when the terms were accessible and comfortable for them.  Can you
discuss aspects of an ancient civilization using modern slang and have a
meaningful discussion?  Absolutely.  When students are researching important
people and accomplishments in history they often delve deeper when proving why
the person/accomplishment is the “GOAT” of that civilization.  Slang brings
students together and crosses language barriers.  It can spark creativity,
engagement, and deeper thinking when incorporated into learning.

I love youth slang right now! It is so creative and playful. And it seems to
move so fast across groups and cultures because of social media. This article
barely scratches the surface of it. Definitely worth looking at it from an
asset-based perspective!

Well, I finally get a chance, after grandkids left, to start to read this…and
gave up.I will continue to speak the English I learned at my (English.Prof)
mother’s knee, and will  continue to type poorly that should not be seen s
reflection of my mother’s schooling.
If the kids don’t understand me and I don’t understand them, I suspect we will
both survive. They will get fed and clothed and housed. They will miss my
scintillating conversation and/or commentary on the ways of the world, but not
really miss it.
So be it.

For those with kids or grand kids, this article from the NYT is illuminating,
