Bemis Hall was gifted to the town in 1892 by George Bemis, a Lincoln resident. George Bemis made his wealth in copper mines. He had originally been involved in the paper business, but turned his sights when he had a light bulb event-literally. When Thomas Edison lit his bulb, George Bemis saw an opportunity -copper needed for copper wires.
Bemis Hall was build to house Town Offices and Town Meeting, on the first floor. The second floor was build to house lectures and performances. Bemis endowed a lecture series, the Bemis Free Lecture Series, that continues to this day. The lecture series was to be “for the edification and entertainment of the citizens of Lincoln.” The money in the endowment is managed by the Commissioners of the Trust, appointed by the town. The series is administered by three Trustees, elected by the town. https://www.lincolntown.org/546/Bemis-Free-Lecture-Series Bemis Hall is owned and operated by the town and currently houses COA/HHS and many independent activities and meetings throughout the day and evening. The building is open to all. It is rent-free to municipal organizations, and available for rent by any others. In other words -IT IS OPEN TO ALL.
