Looking for a tax accountant. My taxes are fairly simple (retirement
income + farm) and I have an excellent helper who is an enrolled agent
(*) who pulls together, categorizes all the financial data for me and my
farm. enters it into a tax package and generates all the necessary
forms/schedules, etc. She also issues any1099s that are needed. My
current tax accountant reviews the forms, signs them and (if it were
necessary) would represent me for any IRS audits/etc. While it would be
a plus if your recommendation knew about farm-related tax laws/issues,
it's not necessary.
(*) An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally licensed tax practitioner who
has passed a 3-part exam covering individual tax returs, business tax
returns, etc. (or has relevant experience as a former IRS employee) and
has cleared a background check by the IRS.
