And then there are the fishers (mistakenly called fisher-cats), a larger member 
of the weasel family, which I've seen in my neighborhood, sometimes on the 
ground, sometimes perched in trees.  They can prey on housecats, so keep yours 
indoors.

I always thought that stoat was simply the English word for weasel, but 
apparently it is the name of a specific English weasel. Here in New England we 
have three kinds of weasels: the long-tailed, the Ermine, and the short- 
tailed. I saw a  short tailed once on my driveway after the birds alerted me to 
its presence.They are particularly interesting in that their coat color changes 
with the seasons.
