I am fairly technically savvy and consider my situation low risk, so I have
created my own security system using Home Automation.

I have a REOLink self-hosted system of cameras which also capture happenings in
the back yard. My wife and I review this each morning to
see the (wildlife) visitors, which include coyote, deer, possum, raccoon etc.

I have additional sensors in and around the house that report to the home
assistant system.
On my phone or computer I have a dashboard showing the current state of things,
including a status summary that is red (bad) or green (good).
I have it set up so it can send notifications to any phone if I want, but since
someone is always home at this point, I’ve got that turned off.

I pay nothing for monitoring and it works exactly the way I choose, but I did
spend some time figuring it out and implementing things.
