I am fairly technically savvy and consider my situation low risk, so I have created my own security system using Home Automation.
I have a REOLink self-hosted system of cameras which also capture happenings in the back yard. My wife and I review this each morning to see the (wildlife) visitors, which include coyote, deer, possum, raccoon etc. I have additional sensors in and around the house that report to the home assistant system. On my phone or computer I have a dashboard showing the current state of things, including a status summary that is red (bad) or green (good). I have it set up so it can send notifications to any phone if I want, but since someone is always home at this point, I’ve got that turned off. I pay nothing for monitoring and it works exactly the way I choose, but I did spend some time figuring it out and implementing things. > > Message: 6 > Date: Sun, 7 Dec 2025 10:27:55 -0500 > From: Deb Wallace <[email protected]> > To: Lincoln talk <[email protected]> > Subject: [LincolnTalk] Home security system recommendations > Message-ID: > <CAAOPvNckX=wyo5wqS=3bndn3zg64cohsmhkrzxjlhzp5ovn...@mail.gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" > > Hi LT- > > I am about to embark on the process of selecting a company to install a > home security system. > > I am a first-timer and have begun my own research, but i thought I?d reach > out and ask if anyone has recommendations for companies to consider or > avoid (re: > cost, customer service, quality of work) or specific features ( > self-monitoring vs 24/7 monitoring, month-to-month or annual contracts > etc).
