>
>PLEASE DON'T BE AN ACCOMPLICE OF A DISASTER SOCIOLOGICAL,
>ENVIROMENTAL AND CULTURAL WHEN YOU GIVE A FLOWER
>
>Giving a flower is expression of sublime feelings between human
>beings, and he is a custom that is used a lot in days as 14th of
>February, Valentine's day and others.
>
>However it results contradictory to compare the meaning of a flower
>and the disasters that generates their cultivation in hothouse.
>
>The flowers industry has grown in the Ecuador in the two last decades,
>due to the cheap cost of handworkers, to the climatic factor and to
>the lack of legislation in enviromental matter and in health.
>
>The peak of the flowers industry has had as victims the rural
>communities and indigenous generating strong impacts, like the
>demonstrated in an investigation carried out by the Union of Popular
>Organizations of Ayora- Cayambe.
>
>In the enviromental matter
>According to studies achieved by the GTZ, in near waters to a
>plantation in Cayambe, County of Pichincha, they met liquid dust
>emanated by the flowre enterprises, including ammonia, phosphates,
>acidity and chemical demand of oxygen. According to the organic
>parameters, in these patterns of water they found [plaguicidas]
>[organofosforados] and [organoclorados], element that contaminate the
>water, the soil and the air.
>
>In the Health matter
>So much the workers of the flower industries like the near communities
>are suffering strong impacts in health, for the intensive use of
>[pesticidas] in the different processes of production of the flower,
>so much for inhalation, ingestion and contact with the skin, causing
>carcinogenic effects, In order to explain this problem, we are going
>to cite a citogenical study carried out recently by the Catholic
>University, that evaluated the health of 41 workers in a plantation,
>where 13 of them are women. In this group of people 31 types of
>[pesticidas] were detected (2 of them extremely dangerous, ALDICARB,
>FENAMIFOS and 2 highly toxic CARBOFURAN, PROFENOFOS) From the 13
>investigated women 4 have suffered abortion. In addition other studies
>with alarming outputs like chromosomical alterations, congenical
>anomalies, low levels of the [acetilcolinesterasa] [eritrocitaria] in
>the blood
>
>In the Economical matter
>With the acelerated growth of the flower enterprises, we have lost
>3.000 hectares of the best land the years before were used for the
>production of basic consumption foods, putting in danger the security
>of feeding of the country. An increment in the cost of the lands has
>also been produced, consumption, strong debts, tendency to the abandon
>of the agricultural works.
>
>In the cultural matter
>due that the plantations are near the indigenous rural communities,
>the industrial process this modifying their culture, the organization
>and their forms of life. in front of these impacts, we couldn't be
>indifferent or accomplices of an enviromental and sociological
>disaster.
>
>
>Please express your concern and your interest in the communities and
>workers affected by the flower industry and decline to buy flowers
>from hothouse. Please Express your love to your couple or friends with
>expressions and actions that doesn't commit the integrity of the
>environment and the Ecuadorian health.
