Generally I don't think there's any way around that, unfortunately.
But I have heard of company softening up their licensing stance when
big clients are involved. Maybe Apple will go for it if this client is
large enough and promises to bring a wide distribution of the
QuickTime player to a large number of Windows users (they obviously
don't have to target Mac users).

The only other suggestion I would have would be the Real video format,
though I have no idea what's involved in their distribution licensing.
