At http://russian.cornell.edu/warec/test_button.htm I have a Shockwave movie with one "go to the frame" line in exitFrame, one standard Director button inserted from the Tools palette with no script and no behaviors, and absolutely nothing else in the movie. The button's sprite has the 0 ink.
On all Windows computers I tested and on two G5 Macs with OS X 10.3.7, Shockwave 10.1, the button behaves quite normally. Click it, and its colors are reversed; release the mouse button, and the colors are back to black-on-white. But on several G4s in my lab, and on a Powerbook with Mac OS 10.3.6 and 3.7, the mouseDown doesn't register until you move the button a little. In other words, you push down the mouse button, and the button's appearance does not change. Then move the mouse a tiny bit without releasing the button, and the colors on the button are reversed. This happens at least half the time I try to click the button. Is this a known quirk? What am I missing? Can someone with a Powerbook or G4 try this page please? The movie itself can be downloaded from http://russian.cornell.edu/warec/test_button.zip It was made with Dir 10.1 on Windows XP, the Shockwave players I've tested with it are also 10.1. The OS X versions I tested are OS X 10.3.6 and 10.3.7. The browser is Safari 1.2.4.
