For my two cents, TinyURL is indispensable for email communication because it converts long URLs into tiny URLs (hence the name). This prevents email hard returns from getting in the way of using the links.
(The reason I chimed in is that sometimes TinyURLs can cease to work while the original links continue to work. I'm not sure why, in every case. So, for something archived, like a list serve, I usually include both links. The TinyURL is conveniently there for email/posting and the full URL, even if it's hard-returned, is there for reference.)
Someone pointed out awhile back (sorry, forget who) that you can enclose very long URLs in a tag to keep them from breaking: <http://www.putnamhill.net/my/very/long/universal/resource/locator/buried/in/some/folder>
