? If the goal is to retrieve data from the server, then Shockwave has had this for years.


(XmlHttpRequest is a recent Microsoft interface, now approved by "webstandards" types, to get a browser to do something similar.)

Rephrased, Director has long had the *capability*, but the precise name later used in Microsoft's proprietary implementation was not the same.
