That behavior is built into QuickTime Player, but is not the default behavior. I believe it also occurs in the QT plugin. I just did a quick test in Director and couldn't reproduce your issue here on Mac. It might be Windows-specific bug, or maybe you have an 'exotic' QuickTime movie which has the behavior implemnted in wired actions? (Should be able to tell if the movie has a sprite track). Have you tried the bare bones test: A new .dir with different .mov files?
