I'm not sure Dubya's visit made a difference in the Governor's race or not, in fact, I'm pretty sure that it didn't. By the time he came to Richmond, I think everybody had their mind made up about the prez. I think that the idea of bringing him in was to "energize the base", but I don't really think that worked. I know from some people who were working on the state level that there was an air of desparation in the phone banks that were being run. It almost seems like the Republican base, statewide, just gave up. (I should note that the GOP's get out the vote effort probably didn't impact my race one way or the other, so my comments aren't sour grapes...) So I feel for him. Well, I suspect that when the final numbers come out, it'll be closer to 20:1 for my race as well, and a pretty good portion of my funds were in-kind contributions to boot. In the end, my opponent was on TV for the last 3 weeks of the campaign and I made do with radio. We haven't done our post-mortem yet, but undecideds broke pretty strongly to him, and I'd guess that TV had a lot to do with that. While in my book 25% is a pretty good ass-kicking, and getting your ass kicked is never any fun, running for office was all in all a good experience. In fact, I'd recommend it to anyone on this list -- there are way too few people in office who understand either technology issues or real problem solving, something I thing we have in large measure on this list. If you've at all thought about it, talk to me (or Darrel). I may post some more thoughts later if anybody's still interested. The post-election feedback has been interesting, to say the least. I got one call from someone I know who told me that he came "this close" to voting for me because he thought I was the better candidate (oh, gee thanks, wanker) to a woman who stopped me on the street to tell me that I was the only Republican that she's ever voted for in the 40 years she's been registered. tmc [To remove yourself from this list, or to change to digest mode, go to http://www.penworks.com/lingo-l.cgi To post messages to the list, email [email protected] (Problems, email [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
