I use BuddyAPI's baFindApp() function, You give it a file extension, and it returns a string pathname to the application (Or an empty string if none is found)
If you need to find a specific program that does not have an associated file type, or is not the primary program for that file, you could find out where in the registry it adds keys for each possible OS and check those locations.
