Michael:

Similar to John I put a fullscreen toggle on videos allowing the user to decide. One client specifically prefers running things fullscreen but I've made them aware of performance and quality drops. I run MPEGs through MPEG Advance Xtra either 352x288 or 512x288 and I don't see a real performance hit scaling them up to 1280x1024 (although common fullscreen sizes are 1024x768), although the quality drops a fair amount. I do see a major performance hit doing the same with QTVRs but the client is happy with it so I don't argue!

So, to concur with John's opinion, give the user the option and they can always toggle back if they don't like it.
