I don't know exactly the limitations of how you need to do this
formatting, so this may be a bit out of left-field. Have you considered
imaging lingo while idle in preparation of you needing the formatting?

Is this real-time formatting by the user? (if so then I guess imaging
lingo is out)

If not, can it be predicted? I've used imaging lingo many times whenever
I needed to scroll anti-aliased text, or dynamically create anti-aliased
text with pre-defined formatting.

Anyways, I may be way off-base not knowing the environment in which you
need to do this, but I thought I'd offer it up.
