1) Please don't cross-post. If you want to ask two separate lists, please
post two separate messages. Otherwise the cross-traffic of people replying
from both lists TO both lists gets to be too much.

2) If you mean the ones that are by Macromedia, like TEXTAUTH.X32 or
SWACOMPR.X32, those are often just internal, used by Director, say for text
editing or for Shockwave Audio Compression, and you don't need to use them
directly. Director started migrating internal functions out into Xtras -
this allows them to fix or upgrade a particular area (say, Shockwave Audio)
without having to redo/retest the whole product.

There are four kinds of Xtras - (1) scripting (Lingo) Xtras, that add
commands to Lingo, which you can list by typing 'showxlib' in the message
window, (2) Sprite Xtras which you can insert in the cast and place on the
stage as a sprite, these live under the 'Insert' menu (typically as media),
(3) Tool Xtras, which live under the Xtras menu, and only work during
authoring mode, and (4) Transition Xtras which are listed in the transition
popup.

Most Xtras that you are aware of are usually scripting or sprite Xtras.

You can see the functions exported by using the Interface command on a
scripting Xtra, as in:

   put interface(xtra "fileio")

which will then list the functions.
