You have to do it with scripting by intercepting what the user types,
passing it to a variable, and then outputting the * to the text field.
something like this:

on keydown me
global p_word
if the keypressed <> RETURN then
        p_word = p_word & the key
        member("text_field").text = member("text_field").text & "*"
end if

end
