Well quicktime can usually display avi unless they're using an incompatible codec - there are many codecs for avi compression.
Try opening an avi on the mac by itself. Does it work? Next make sure that you're doing the linking properly; remember if you're doing it via lingo that directories are broken up by ":" on the mac rather than "\".
