Well, you're working with the right engine then. ;)

If you have not already done so, search your Lingo code to see if 
there is any script, any place in your program, that is modifying 
text in anything at all.

If there is, check that code to see if it's trying to plug some value 
back into the sprite you're trying to clear.

It might be best to start with a global search for the term "text" 
inside all your Lingo scripts, because there's no way I know of for 
text to simply begin popping into sprites without some kind of 
command someplace telling it to do so...
