Andy,
Ross has the right idea. Embed the Shockwave ActiveX control in your VB app, then have
the end user install Shockwave and you're all set. The ActiveX control has a number of
methods and events available that allow for communication between the VB app and the
embedded DCR content (insert the Shockwave ActiveX control into a Director movie in
authoring for a quick and dirty peek at the methods/events - they include both
externalEvent and evalScript). While it's a bit outdated you'll find the info you need
to get started in the following tech note:

The above also links to a few other helpful docs in the Director Support Center. In
order to distribute a Shockwave installer on fixed media (CDs) or on a corporate
intranet you'll need to fill out our free licensing forms at the following URL:

I've been told there's usually a quick turn-around on licensing applications. Hope
that helps.

Cheers,
Tom
