Yeah, you're not too far from taking the same route I began with,
with disclosure triangles, spaces to offset directory levels and so
on. A kind of Explorer view.
Where I got into trouble was when I wanted to enable file
manipulation as well as simply displaying data -- I wanted to stop
showing a static system and instead create something that the user
could manipulate.
I actually had to abandon the explorer view to make it work. It was
far too excruciating. I might return to it in the sense that you get
the tree on the left that shows only folders, and the tree on the
right that shows only files and folders contained in the current
folder -- that might let me handle drag/drop manipulation again
without losing every single marble I have left (single being the
operative word here ;) -- but I can tell you now that when you
actually make a filesystem like that, the level of respect you gain
for the people who write GUI code for OSen goes way, way up.
