8.5 has faster Lingo execution than 8, in my experience, and seems to

Yeep! I'd stick with eight and a half, myself.

We went QT because nothing else was a reliably crossplatform. MPEG
will work on eiother platform but requires some extra coding to know
which version of the Cast item to load, while QT doesn't present that
difficulty. "But the installer..." someone whines. Shut up. Run the
damn installer. Deal with it.
As for what's the best way to do the video -- that's not a question
that can be easily answered, as you know. :\

MP3 reduces size greatly, and the high bitrates sound pretty good.
Our clients like having the option to use WAV as well, though,
because they are still using sound coders written in the *twentieth*
century, if you can believe that.

Fine if you twiddle with direct to stage on it and so on. Watch it if
you've got multiple Flash and video sprites on one "page" -- clients
love pulling stunts like that and about 90 percent of the code I've
written for client-settable Flash/vid sprites is there just to keep
the media types from interfering with each other should they happen
to be on stage at the same time.

Externally has fewer variables if all you want to do is load the file.

No clue. All the above should be doable on a machine capable of
running 98, but you'd be nuts frankly to shoot lower than 64 Mb RAM,
100 MHz PII, 16-bit or better display, 800 by 600 or larger.
