This was added for Director and Shockwave 8.5, for versions 8.0 and older use an *.ini 
file. Please keep in mind that on the Mac you don't actually get a message window 
though, you get a text file dump to the hard drive so it's not exactly what's being 
asked for, sorry.

And the property is:

the debugPlaybackEnabled = TRUE

When set to true the message window opens/text file dump begins. Once you set it to 
FALSE though that sucker is _closed_ and cannot be reopened during that session of 
Shockwave.
