Sounds like your system fonts are screwed - I had the same problem in Director, but other apps were fine.
I forget now exactly which font MACR use for the Director interface (kinda looks like 7pt MS Sans Serif) but if it's gone funny then Director won't use it and do all manner of strangeness, even if the font renders correctly in other apps. I fixed it by copying all the fonts from the Fonts folder to a temp store (do it through the command prompt is better as you get the files directly instead of the Windows-built aliases and extra association junk) and remove all the fonts from the system. You're gonna have to reboot to clean out the registry so be prepared for some almost unreadable screen layouts!! then just copy the fonts back intot he Fonts folder using "Install Font" as normal and check the box to copy them too. Reboot and things *should* be OK. If not, you could try re-installing Director but it didn't work for me, but then again Windows is a strange beast... Hope this helps!!
