An API is an application programming interface and while I don't know
enough about how Director works under the hood to say with certainty, I
believe this DLL is there to provide Director, projectors, Shockwave
(and you!) certain hooks into the Windows operating system as a whole,
thus allowing it to display material onscreen, respond to user and
system commands, etc.
As for why the crash is happening -- good question. Things to look for
in general include:
1. Having MIAWs close and forget themselves
2. Not pausing digital video before closing the window or section of
your program that is playing the video
3. Doing the same as (2) with audio; and
4. Explicitly unloading resources that Director might still need or try
to reload immediately (that is, using the Lingo unload commands)
There could be other issues but these are the big ones I avoid.
