This is an interesting problem. AFAIK the cursor is 1-bit -- a black
line. That it's manifesting on your system in a less than optimal way
makes me think that perhaps, somehow, it is being rendered with
"reverse" ink or the equivalent thereof when it appears in a background
transparent sprite.

I think what I would probably do, for a few reasons, is set the
sprite's ink to copy when it's being edited. The reasons are:

   1. This would eliminate the problem you are having;
   2. This would probably let the user type things in faster,
      as Director would not be having to render variable content
      (text being entered) atop other content -- that does take
      some time to do;
   3. This would probably make the text being thus entered easier
      to read for end users;
   4. This would make it easier (probably) to see what has been
      selected by dragging, assuming the user can do this or chooses
      to do this; and
   5. There would be no ambiguity regarding which item was going to be
      the target for text entry as the user was typing (if you had more
      than one text sprite on the screen) and would provide users with
      a visual cue as to what was expected in any case ("Oh, that's
      gone opaque and has a blinking cursor in it...").

Does that make sense?

Also consider using different ink types, perhaps matte, or
lighter/darker or whatever. But I think I would consider just making
the currently-active edit target opaque.
