Why give users something that's "better than nothing", when you should give
them the best that's out there? (That being QT6.) Besides, it's illegal to
distribute any QT version other than 6, unless you started replicating the
project before 6 came out, in which case you would be allowed to continue to
distribute 5.

Subject: <lingo-l> 3. Re: How can I install a minimum QT Player without
going through registration and download? (Allen Stare-IMM)

Well, we always ship with QT4 on the basis that it works and it's better
than nothing. We use two files (remembering this name, might not be right) -
QTinstaller.exe and QTInstallcache.qdat (the latter being the bit that the
QT installer usually tries to download). QTInstaller.exe automatically uses
the installchache information without going to any web sites - it also does
not need to go to the web to check for newer versions, or indeed need to go
to the web for anything. If you would like to use it, I'll look into
uploading the files somewhere you can get them, as I can't honestly say
whether they're still on the Apple site or not.

Another trick is simply to give people a choice, and keep on with it - i.e.
"You will not be able to view the video parts of this presentation without
Quicktime, but you may continue if you wish", and show this message every
time you need to show a video. This can get irritating.

Idea 3 is to simply duplicate the video in QT and AVI for each version, you
lazy tykes (AVI being native to Windows). On the codec front, we tend to use
Sorenson for CDs as I read somewhere that it's supposed to be good for
running off CD, but how true this is I don't know. If you do decide to go QT
for Mac and AVI for windows, cross-platform codecs aren't an issue; cinepak
seems good for AVI.
