OK, this is a general warning/info post to all my regular mailinglists, since there is a virus doing the rounds at the moment called Bugbear, and it's a nasty little blighter. Symantec has just upgraded it's threat rating to 4 (5 is worst).
I've received two copies of it so far, in as many days. The reason for this warning is that messages containing this virus *really* look like they were genuinely sent by the person named in the "from" header. However, this is most likely a forgery, and the message is in fact forwarded. If you receive this virus perportedly through one of these mailinglists, please do not reply to the message - especially on list. There has already been a lengthy off-topic discussion on another list because of a very genuine-looking "newsletter" that was sent out. If you examine the headers you may be able to determine the ISP of the genuine sender, but only the ISP can tell the true sender of the message. You may want to forward the full headers to abuse@<isp>, but it is unlikely anything will be done about the infected user. The best thing to do with this worm is probably just to delete it and forget it, annoying though it is.
