Have you tried putting the quicktime into a miaw (same size as quicktime and
set to be miles off stage) then grab the image of the miaw stage?
Not sure if this will have implications on performance though as I think you
will need the quicktime set to be not DTS.
The trick above definitely works.
Here's what I've got in my MIAW to do it:

sprite(1).movieTime = whatTime

updateStage
end if
return (the activeWindow).image
end

just call it from your main stage using something like this:
(I have this code within a movie called "qt_image.dir")
MIAW = window "MIAW"
MIAW.filename = (the moviePath) & "qt_Image.dir"
tell MIAW
qtImage = getImage(pathFileNameOfTheQT)
end tell
you can then reduce that image to thumbnail size in your main movie

My other thought is, if you know in advance what video's there are to choose
from, then simply grab images from them in authoring, store them and call as
needed.
